BiOVE contributed to ISEA 2025 (The 30th International Symposium on Electronic Art) in two ways: by participating in the symposium’s review ecosystem as part of the artistic program / Art Jury context, and by presenting a Full Paper in the academic program. The official ISEA2025 site lists BiOVE on the International Program Committee (IPC) page, where the symposium explains that academic submissions are reviewed by IPC members and that artworks in the artistic program are evaluated through a single-blind review process by Art Juries and Artistic Directors.
At ISEA 2025, Yeom presented the full paper “SAUNA LAB: Towards Alternative Knowledge Capital in the Climate Change Era.” The uploaded conference schedule places this presentation on 27 May 2025, in Building 223 / Room 504, under Collective Action / Community 2, from 10:00–11:20. The schedule lists Yeom’s paper as the final presentation in that session.
Full Paper Presentation
The presented paper, “SAUNA LAB: Towards Alternative Knowledge Capital in the Climate Change Era,” introduces SAUNA LAB as a series of artistic research projects that challenge climate knowledge hierarchies and capitalist valuation through Asian thermal bath culture heritage, aging bodies, and the framework of 3D performative apparatus-environment. The abstract positions the work as a proposal for alternative systems of value and knowledge production beyond market-driven climate discourse.
According to the paper, the project examines how traditional wisdom, aging communities, and technological mediation can be repositioned within climate adaptation discourse. It argues that older populations should not be seen only as climate-vulnerable groups, but also as holders of adaptive, embodied, and intergenerational knowledge.
About the Paper
The paper traces SAUNA LAB through implementations in Daejeon and Hualien, connecting artistic research, cultural heritage, and climate discourse. It frames the series as an effort to rethink environmental knowledge production through performative architecture, multilingual narrative, and AI-powered video installation. In this model, thermal bathhouse culture becomes not simply a visual motif, but a methodological and conceptual structure for reimagining environmental intelligence.
The paper further proposes speculative concepts such as the Thermal Knowledge Bank, Body Adaptation Index, and Healing Capacity Evaluation as alternative models for understanding value, resilience, and knowledge transmission. These concepts are used to challenge standardized scientific metrics and to foreground embodied and culturally situated forms of adaptation.
